Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about Cogneez — the illustrated FCOG(SA) / CMSAexam-prep app for South African doctors and registrars. Can't find what you need? Email us or use the in-app feedback form.
- What is Cogneez?
- Cogneez is an illustrated exam-prep app for South African doctors sitting their FCOG(SA) specialist exams. It pairs a clinician-written, fully illustrated textbook with 4,300+ exam-format single-best-answer questions, a spaced-repetition recall engine, and an AI study tutor called Jeeni. It runs in your browser and installs as a mobile-first app, so you can read and practise anywhere.
- Who is Cogneez for?
- Cogneez is built for South African registrars and doctors training in obstetrics and gynaecology who are preparing for the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa exams. It suits anyone working through the FCOG(SA) Primary, Intermediate or Final levels who wants structured chapters, exam-format practice and a recall system tuned to the way you actually remember.
- Which exams and colleges does Cogneez cover?
- Cogneez covers the FCOG(SA) qualification of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, part of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). All three levels are live: FCOG(SA) Primary (96 basic-science chapters), Intermediate (128 chapters) and Final (82 chapters spanning all 21 domains). Content is mapped to the exam blueprint rather than a generic syllabus.
- Is Cogneez free, and how much does it cost?
- Every chapter is free to read — no account needed. Pro costs R400 per month (ZAR), or about 10% less on a 6-month plan, and unlocks the full question bank, practice and mock sessions, and the Jeeni tutor across the whole FCOG(SA) package. Max is R800 per month (or about 10% less on 6 months) and adds no daily or weekly limits, unlimited OSCE examiner stations, and priority early access to new features — including conversational Jeeni as it rolls out. Already on Pro? Upgrade to Max from your account and pay only the difference for the rest of this month. You can start a 7-day free Pro trial with no card required, so nothing is charged automatically.
- Is the content clinician-written and current with SA guidelines?
- Yes. Every chapter is written and reviewed by clinicians, and clinical claims are checked against published guidelines rather than from memory. Cogneez is kept current with South African practice — the National Department of Health and Essential Medicines List, SASOG, and other relevant bodies — and chapters carry a last-updated stamp so you can see when material was revised.
- How does the spaced-repetition recall work?
- Cogneez uses FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm, to schedule reviews against your personal forgetting curve. Instead of re-reading, you practise active recall, and each topic comes back just before you would forget it. Reviews interleave across topics like the real exam, so knowledge is still there months later on exam day rather than fading after a cram.
- What is Jeeni, the AI tutor?
- Jeeni is the in-app AI study tutor. She reads your diagnostic and question history to spot your strengths and gaps, then suggests the next best topic to work on — coaching grounded in the verified Cogneez textbook, in a senior-registrar voice. Jeeni also helps keep the courses current. A fuller two-way conversational mode is rolling out on the Max tier.
- How many practice questions are there?
- There are over 4,300 exam-format single-best-answer (SBA) questions across the FCOG(SA) package. Each question is written to demand genuine clinical judgement — one clearly best answer among plausible distractors — with index-aligned teaching explanations for every option, so you learn why each choice is right or wrong rather than just memorising answers.
- Can I use Cogneez on my phone or offline?
- Yes. Cogneez is a mobile-first progressive web app (PWA), so it works in any modern browser and installs to your home screen like a native app — no app store needed. Chapters you have opened are available for offline reading, which is handy on the ward or commute when signal is poor. It works on phone, tablet and desktop.
- How is Cogneez different from generic MRCOG or international prep?
- Cogneez is built specifically for the FCOG(SA) exams and South African practice — thresholds, drug availability, the EML and NDoH protocols — not adapted from UK MRCOG or other international material. Content is mapped to the CMSA exam blueprint, written by SA clinicians, and uses SI units and local context throughout, so what you study matches what your examiners and patients actually expect.
- Is my data safe and POPIA-compliant?
- Yes. Cogneez is built to comply with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and your data is stored in South Africa. We collect only what is needed to run your account and personalise your study, and your study history is used to coach you — never sold. You can delete your account at any time from your settings.
- How do I cancel, and is there a refund?
- You can cancel anytime from your account page; your Pro access then continues until the end of the period you have already paid for. The 7-day trial needs no card, so there is nothing to cancel if you do not subscribe. Where South African consumer law gives you additional cancellation or refund rights, those always apply.
